
Abstract:
Research ObjectiveMalnutrition is closely associated with chronic diseases, highlighting the necessity of optimizing dietary intake. The EU-funded PREVENTOMICS project introduced personalized nutrition solutions to address this issue. This study aims to conduct a Health Technology Assessment (HTA) comparing the personalized nutrition interventions developed by this project with non-personalized nutrition interventions (control group) in individuals with normal weight, overweight, or obesity. Its objective is to provide decision support for the further development and implementation of personalized nutrition.
MethodsThe PREVENTOMICS interventions were evaluated using the European Network for Health Technology Assessment (EUnetHTA) Core Model, which includes a methodological framework covering different domains of value assessment. Information was gathered through: [1] various statistical analyses and modeling studies; [2] questionnaires distributed to project partners; and [3] other published or unpublished materials.
ResultsClinical trials of the PREVENTOMICS interventions showed differences in body mass index (BMI) change compared to the control group, with a range of -0.80 to 0.20 kg/m². Long-term outcome predictions indicated overall improvements in health outcomes for the intervention group; some interventions (e.g., those in the UK) demonstrated cost-effectiveness. The study also identified ethical concerns regarding health inequalities and the current lack of specific legal regulations for personalized nutrition interventions. Choice modeling studies revealed that participants were open to personalized nutrition interventions, with decision-making primarily influenced by the price of the intervention.
ConclusionThe PREVENTOMICS clinical trials showed promising effectiveness with no major safety concerns identified; however, uncertainty remains due to small sample sizes (n=60-264) and short follow-up periods (10-16 weeks). Larger-scale, longer-duration trials are needed to obtain reliable evidence before considering implementation. Furthermore, developers should explore financing options and collaborate with policymakers to prevent the exclusion of specific groups due to information gaps.
